UVU's successful completion of a Habitat for Humanity house in the spring of 2008 has led to a second partnership with Utah County's chapter of Habitat for Humanity. This Thursday Sept. 3, the ground will be broken on the two-story, four-bedroom, two-bath home in Orem. The house is being constructed for a family of five.
"We’re excited to work with the UVU community again," said Kena Mathews, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Utah County. "Our last experience was wonderful and we expect this to be as well. I think it’s a great opportunity for students to get engaged in the community and we love the idea of partnering to bring hope to a family in need."
The Volunteer & Service Learning Center at UVU has been the fire beneath the project, but the UVU community as a whole has made it a true partnership, Mathews said. The home is being constructed by students in the UVU Department of Construction Management, headed up by DeWayne Erdmann. UVU departments, along with participating community organizations, have the opportunity to "adopt" a room in the house, contributing on any level from painting the room to fully furnishing it. The rooms are adopted beginning with the children's rooms.
"The kids love when their rooms are done when they get there," Mathews said. "It’s like Habitat for Humanity’s version of Extreme Home Makeover."
The groundbreaking will take place at 165 E. 800 South in Orem at noon. There will be a barbecue after a short ceremony. All of the UVU community is invited to attend.
For more information about the project or to adopt a room, please contact Kena Mathews at (801) 344-8527 or (801) 735-2005.
