UVU Student to Intern at Library of Congress

When it comes to learning in her desired field, Utah Valley University’s Carol Acevedo, an aspiring master of library science, is stepping onto the grandest stage: the U.S. Library of Congress.

"I will be working with and learning from the ultimate masters of library science," said Acevedo, who is the first UVU student to receive an internship at the largest library in the world.

Acevedo, who will graduate from UVU with a bachelor’s degree in history this week, has received the Junior Fellows Internship at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., this summer beginning June 1. Following the internship, she plans to apply to graduate programs in library science.

Acevedo, a native of Puerto Rico, will be working in the Prints and Photography Division, assisting with inventory and physical preservation of Herbert Block’s cartoons, which have been published in The Washington Post since the 1930s.

"Carol is very strong academically and is a real asset to the student newspaper," said Brent Sumner, coordinator of student media and advisor for the UVU Review student newspaper. "She has been on our layout and design team for two years and is always looking for better ways to improve our newspaper product."

Acevedo’s desire was to have some sort of internship in Washington, D.C., after graduation, so she contacted the UVU Career Services & Student Employment Office.

With the help of Marsha Haynes, the director of UVU Internship Services, Acevedo applied and interviewed for an internship available in the office of Utah Senator Bob Bennett. At the same time, she expressed interest in an internship at the Library of Congress, was nominated by Senator Bennett’s office, and was accepted soon after.

"Thanks to the knowledgeable and supportive staff at the UVU Career Services & Student Employment Office I will be able to participate in this amazing, life-changing opportunity," she said.

The focus of the Library of Congress internship program is on increasing access to collections by making them better known and accessible to researchers including scholars, students, teachers, creators and the general public.
