Engineering Graphics Go 3-D (and Come to Life) at UVU Technology Expo

The Utah Valley University Department of Engineering Graphics & Design Technology (EGDT) is sponsoring its 3rd annual 3-D Design Derby on May 5 in the Computer Science Building (fourth floor).

The event is increasing in popularity as organizers are expecting close to 200 high school students for this year’s competition after having 137 participants last year.

"Each year the quality of the car designs and their speed improve," said Dave Manning, a professor in the engineering graphics and design technology department.

The competition is designed to test a student’s ability to conceptualize a model car design; produce a virtual 3-D model using constraint-based modeling software; configure each design to accommodate standard parts, size and weight limitations; track dimensions; manufacture a car and then race it against others. Points are awarded for marketing illustrations, detail drawings, appearance, features and speed. Winners will be awarded with prizes based on performance.

The competition allows high school students from around the state to engage with UVU in learning and applying engineering, design, 3-D modeling and prototyping skills in a fun and competitive setting. UVU students helping with the program will interact with the high school students, which in turn will aid EGDT with recruiting and promotion and solidifying the high school/university relationship.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with competition and judging running through mid-afternoon. The public is invited to see the race from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. with the awards ceremony from 2-3 p.m. in room CS-404.

The winning cars will be displayed from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with the Technology Fair/Expo being held at the McKay Events Center on the same day as the derby.
