Utah Valley University business lecturer Marty Val Hill was recently nominated for and received two Best of State awards as the best individual volunteer and best college/university professor. He will be honored at the Utah Best of the State Awards Gala on Saturday, May 30, at the Salt Palace Convention Center Ballroom.
"It’s always both humbling and rewarding to have others acknowledge your work," Hill said. "The great rewards, however, come from the lips of my students – sometimes years down the road. I have been truly blessed to be able to share a piece of myself with the wonderful students here at UVU."
Last year, Hill was named best individual volunteer and best appointed public official from the same organization.
"Quite simply, volunteering is just helping those around us and serving those who are in need," he said. "I must confess that volunteering to me is a somewhat selfish activity. I feel so good when I am helping someone else."
Currently, Hill is the president of the National Speaker Association’s Mountain West Region (Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah) and serves on a national special expertise panel for the Society for Human Resource Management. Earlier this year he was inducted into the local Boy Scouts of America council Hall of Leadership and was nominated for inclusion in the national BSA Hall of Leadership.
Over the years he has worked with a dozen other groups: Utah County Community Action, Heart2Home Foundation, Salt Lake County recreation center community computer labs, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, AmeriCorps and the Boy Scouts of America where he serves on the Utah National Parks Council executive board.
