UVU Board of Trustees Honors Four Members of UVU Faculty, Staff

The Utah Valley University Board of Trustees recently honored four members of UVU’s faculty and staff for their excellence in teaching, dedication to higher learning and service to UVU students.

This year’s UVU Board of Trustees Awards of Excellence recipients were Dr. Jun (Michael) Ling, associate professor of mathematics; Dr. Scott C. Hammond, interim department chair and associate professor of management; Michael J. Freeman, director of the Library; and Dr. Robert Loveridge, director of Institutional Research & Information.

DR. JUN (MICHAEL) LING

Ling is an exceptional world-class scholar and devoted teacher. As an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, he works on the cutting edge of advanced mathematics with research interests in geometric analysis, Riemannian geometry, and partial differential equations. His specialty is geometric flows, particularly the Ricci flow, which is currently a rapidly progressing, high profile area in modern mathematics.

DR. SCOTT C. HAMMOND

Hammond has accomplished outstanding achievements in teaching, scholarship, administration, innovation, and public service. In 2008, he successfully led the application process for the Carnegie Community Engagement classification, which was granted to UVU in December 2008. For the past year, he has led the effort to create and staff an MBA program at UVU, which is on track to begin in fall 2010. In 2006, he helped create the Case Statement for University Status for then-UVSC, which led to university status being granted by the State Board of Regents and Legislature on July 1, 2008.

MICHAEL J. FREEMAN

As director of the Library, Freeman became the first full-time professional to serve in that position. After facilitating a strong community college library, he continued to challenge his own professional development so he could transition library services to the university level. His years of planning, preparation and coordination culminated with the completion of the new 200,000 square foot Library in 2008, and was a major contributor to the planning, design, construction and financing of this building.

DR. ROBERT LOVERIDGE

Loveridge’s leadership has been instrumental in developing and supporting UVU’s mission, strategic directions, and objectives. He currently serves as the Utah ACT Representative to the national ACT office and has served as the chair of the Utah ACT Council. He organized several conferences for high school counselors and college advisors to use data collected through the ACT to improve student success.
