Utah Valley University assistant dean of emergency services Dr. Jeff Maxfield and adjunct instructor Shawn Pepper have been selected to be part of a 24-person panel to help create a national curriculum model in homeland security.
"Homeland security is a growing discipline in the university and college setting," said Maxfield, who has taught full-time or adjunct at UVU for more than 20 years. "Unfortunately there haven’t been too many guidelines available (as far as curriculum)."
Maxfield and Pepper will make presentations on the degree UVU offers in public emergency service administration at the June 11-12 conference at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. This will be part of the initial phase of identifying outcomes and objects for a model program at the baccalaureate level.
Currently, UVU offers the only public emergency service administration degree in the state, and Maxfield said participation in the conference will only help UVU’s program become stronger.
"UVU can become the leader in the state and in the Intermountain West in offering a degree in homeland security," Maxfield said.
Individuals who earn a degree in homeland security can explore employment options in various fields including law enforcement, fire and emergency services, emergency and disaster planning, emergency management, public works, community preparedness and information security.
Maxfield worked for the Salt Lake County Fire Department for 24 years and was the chief operations officer for the department before retiring in 1996.
Pepper is an adjunct professor who currently works for the state of Utah in homeland security.
