First Commencement as a University Projected to be the Largest Yet for UVU

In its historic first commencement as a university and the institution’s largest to date, Utah Valley University is projected to award 3,743 degrees and certificates at its 68th Commencement Ceremony this Friday, May 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the McKay Center.

"The University has undergone rapid change, and the time this graduating class has spent here has been extraordinary," said UVU Interim President Elizabeth Hitch. "The 2008-2009 academic year has been an exciting and energizing time and these students graduate well prepared to be professionally competent people of integrity who will serve as good stewards of the places in which they live."

This year’s graduates represent 46 states and 11 countries. At the Commencement Ceremony, a total of 1,967 students will receive bachelor degrees, 1,760 will receive associate degrees and 16 will receive one-year certificates or diplomas.

Among the most popular fields of study for this graduating class are the following, each of which are projected to produce 100 or more graduates:

Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be the commencement speaker. President Monson and his wife Frances J. Monson, as well as long-time University supporter Phyllis Jordan Christensen of Heber City, Utah, will be awarded honorary doctorate degrees at the ceremony.

Morning convocations will begin at 8 a.m. for the College of Humanities & Social Sciences (McKay Center) and the School of Education (Activity Center), and 8:30 a.m. for University College (Student Center Ballroom). Afternoon convocations begin at 12:30 p.m. for the College of Technology & Computing (McKay Center), College of Science & Health (Activity Center) and School of the Arts (Student Center Ballroom), and 2:30 p.m. for the Woodbury School of Business (McKay Center).
