World-Renowned Climatologist to Repeat Call for Action

World-renowned climatologist Dr. James Hansen will address at Utah Valley University Tuesday, repeating his characteristic call for an immediate cap and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Hansen’s address will be held April 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the UVU Library auditorium (LI 120). This event is hosted by the University's College of Science & Health in conjunction with the Utah Valley Sierra Forum.

"We are so pleased and honored to have Dr. Hansen visit the UVU campus and provide his insights," said UVU Dean Sam Rushforth. "Hansen is one of our most important living climate scientists and has brought profound insight to policy makers and citizens."

Dr. Hansen heads the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, a part of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., Earth Sciences Division, a position he has held since 1981. He also serves as an adjunct professor of earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University.

Dr. Hansen is regarded widely throughout the world science and academic community for his research on climate science and global warming, and has been very public with his calls for dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide in order to stave off the worst of the planet climate disruptions. Dr. Hansen has called for an immediate cap and reduction on greenhouse gas emissions, including coal fired power plants, which are the single largest source of carbon dioxide in the U.S. His work has garnered the attention of scholars and media worldwide.

In 2003, Dr. Hansen published "Can We Defuse the Global Warming Time Bomb?" in which he makes the scientific case on how human activities, principally the combustion of carbon-based fuels, are having and will continue to have an increasingly dramatic impact on the earth's climate.

In the paper he states that "halting global warming requires urgent, unprecedented international cooperation, but the needed actions are feasible and have additional benefits for human health, agriculture and the environment."

Dr. Hansen will also speak Monday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Auditorium of the University of Utah.
