With added benefits such as resident tuition for all students and free parking passes, Utah Valley University is seeing a record number of students attending this summer, building on the institution's overall growth trajectory over the past several semesters.
Last year at this time, UVU had 8,316 students registered for summer term, and this year the number is already more than 9,400. This represents a 13.2 percent increase in total enrollment, which university officials attribute to both the economy and the institution’s overall growth trend and popularity. UVU’s full-time enrollment this year is up 16.2 percent from last year, with nearly 5,000 full-time students compared to last year’s 4,287. As a result, UVU is offering 1,670 summer courses, nearly 100 more than the year before.
"Students are realizing the benefits of taking summer courses - particularly the benefit of advancing more quickly to program completion," said Dr. Elizabeth Hitch, UVU interim president. "UVU continues to rise to the challenge of meeting students’ needs and contributing to Utah’s educated workforce."
The summertime growth comes on the heels of 12 percent and 8.6 percent overall enrollment increases this past fall and spring semesters respectively and seven consecutive semesters of growth since spring 2007.
Registration for Block I is now closed, but students can still register for Block II, which begins June 25 and runs through Aug. 12.
Traditional and non-traditional students alike are taking advantage of the extra perks summer session offers, and they’re doing it in droves. In addition to resident tuition rates (for all students - including out of state and international students) and free parking passes, smaller class sizes and increased interaction with instructors help students of all levels get a head start on college, enabling earlier graduation for some and allowing those who are behind to get back on track to graduate at their desired time.
"Summer session at UVU is a hidden gem that more and more students are discovering," said Bob Burns, director of extended studies. "Smaller class sizes, more interaction with instructors, along with a beautiful campus with academic and student support resources available make it appealing."
In order to enroll in UVU summer school, new students must be admitted to UVU and pay the one-time admission fee. Admission forms can be completed online by logging on to www.uvu.edu/admissions. For more information about summer classes, visit www.uvu.edu/summer. Final enrollment data for summer session will be available the first part of September.
