Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes Magazine and 1996 and 2000 presidential candidate, will headline Senator Orrin Hatch’s economic forum, titled "The Fiscal Future of America," Friday, Aug. 28 at Utah Valley University.
Joining Sen. Hatch and Forbes for the panel will be the former director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Holtz Eakin, who has also served as chief economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisors.
"Our nation is at a critical juncture," Hatch said. "My office has received literally thousands of letters, phone calls and e-mails from Utahns who are extremely concerned about America’s fiscal future. I envision this forum as a way for our citizens to have an opportunity to not only listen to some speakers who have been at the forefront of our economy, but to ask questions of the experts and provide feedback to me that I can arm myself with for this fight in Washington."
The forum will discuss a range of economic topics including the basics of the federal budget, the federal budget deficit, fiscal components of health care reform, and the effect of recent and proposed legislation such as the stimulus bill. It will also investigate why economic growth and productivity are key to solving America’s financial problems.
"A key function of a university is to provide the community with a forum for discourse on important topics," said UVU Distinguished Professor of Ethics Elaine Englehardt. "This event will be an excellent platform for people of diverse opinions to join in a discussion about our country’s fiscal future, which is one of the most relevant issues facing us today. In fall of 2008, this country saw the worst economic crisis most of us have ever experienced. Hopefully, we can gain some insight from people who have been at ground level during the rebuilding of our economic structure."
Hatch has served as a U.S. Senator from Utah since 1977. He is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and serves on the subcommittees on energy, national resources and infrastructure; and taxation and IRS oversight.
The forum will be held in the Ragan Theater on UVU campus from 9-11:30 a.m., with refreshments and technical support courtesy of UVU’s Woodbury School of Business and the Center for the Study of Ethics. (UVU, the Woodbury School of Business and the Center for the Study of Ethics are non-advocacy, non-political entities.) The forum is free and open to the public.
