Center for the Study of Ethics Announces Annual Fellow

The Ethics Across the Curriculum Faculty Advisory Committee (EACFAC) recently announced Dr. Ruhul H. Kuddus as the University Faculty Fellow in Ethics for 2009-2010.

Dr. Kuddus will receive a $7,000 grant, which will assist his research regarding the ethics of stem cell research and organ transplantation. He is the third UVU faculty member to hold the fellowship, succeeding David Knowlton, associate professor of anthropology (in 2008-2009) and Laura Hamblin, professor of English and literature (in 2007-2008).

The purpose of the fellowship in ethics is to facilitate faculty scholarship in interdisciplinary ethics, exploring moral challenges in a variety of disciplines.

Dr. Kuddus, an associate professor of biology, teaches microbiology, immunology and molecular biology.

He obtained his undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, a master’s degree in biology from George Mason University, and his doctorate in molecular genetics and biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.

Prior to joining UVU, Dr. Kuddus served as a member of the Thomas Starzl Transplantation Institute and as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Kuddus has been published widely in the areas of molecular biology, transplantation immunology and biotechnology. Beyond his laboratory research, he worked in various interdisciplinary projects. He served as the president of Development Initiative of Bangladesh (an association founded by the Bangladeshi-American scientists and academicians) and edited two volumes of works on developmental issues of less-developing countries.

In 2008, UVU Center for Engaged Learning funded Dr. Kuddus to establish an open access international journal on human progress. His main focus on interdisciplinary research is on medical ethics, ethics of organ procuring and transplantation and biotechnology transfer.

Dr. Kuddus will present the findings of his research and scholarship during his fellowship year at the annual University Faculty Fellow in Ethics keynote address during Ethics Awareness Week in September 2010.
