In conjunction with Wolverine Wednesday, current or prospective UVU students, interested in exploring summer classes, are invited to attend a "Summer Kick-off" event Wednesday, March 25 at the UVU Orem campus’ Center Courtyard. From noon to 1 p.m., University representatives will be on site and available to answer any questions attendees may have about summer session courses at UVU. As an added bonus, J-Dawgs will be available at a discounted price, and snow cones and prizes will be given away.
"Every summer, attendance increases for summer terms," said Cheryl Levi, coordinator at the UVU West Campus. "According to UVU Institutional Research data, there were nearly 8,500 students enrolled in summer classes in 2008, which was up 8.8 percent over the year before."
"Summer Makes Sense" is the theme for this summer’s session at UVU. The reasons for this theme are obvious, Levi said. "Taking classes in the summer is fun. Campus is less crowded and the environment is more relaxed. The classes are smaller (making it easier to interact with instructors) and students can get through classes more quickly since the summer sessions are shorter. Moreover, working students can enhance their careers and employability by completing or advancing in their area of study."
Many courses offered over the summer fill general education requirements. However, a number of unique classes community members may be interested in will be offered through Weekend College. These include American Social Dance on Friday evenings from 5:30-8 p.m., and on Saturdays, students can take a "Paint Your Own Car" class from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Additionally, Levi said all students - including out-of-state and international students - receive in-state tuition for the summer terms. Students can enroll for classes offered during three different sessions: Session II, which runs May 7-June 24; Session III, June 25-Aug. 14; and a Weekend College Session IV, May 8-July 18.
Classes are also offered in multiple locations including UVU South (at Spanish Fork High School), the main campus in Orem, and at UVU West (located in the National Guard Building, west of I-15 from the main campus), and are offered during both daytime and evening hours.
Registration begins March 25, the day of the kick-off event. For additional information on UVU summer session classes, call (801) 863-8449 or visit www.uvu.edu/summer.
