BYU Opera Singers to Present Recital and Master Class in UVU Music Department

Soprano Jennifer Welch-Babidge and baritone Darrell Babidge, both on the voice faculty at Brigham Young University, will present an evening of opera lieder and art songs by Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Gershwin and others Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 in the Gunther Trades Building, room 416.

Welch-Babidge received her Bachelor of Arts in Music and her Master of Vocal Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. She has performed with the Lindemann Young Artist Program as well as the Metropolitan Opera. Welch-Babidge has been praised by The New York Times for her vocal "authority, agility and bright-toned beauty," and performs worldwide.

Darrell Babidge studied vocal performance at the Royal Northern College of Music in England where he received his bachelor’s degree. Babidge continued his education at Brigham Young University, receiving his master’s degree in music. He completed his education with a professional degree in vocal performance from the Manhattan School of Music. The Deseret News has said that Babidge "brings confidence and passion to his demanding role."

This operatic duo will also conduct a vocal master class at noon on Oct. 1, in the same room, featuring outstanding UVU music students.

UVU assistant professor of music Hilary Demske stated that these events will "provide a unique opportunity for our students to hear world-class artists perform and teach."

Both events are free and open to the public.
