After more than three years of completing self-studies, gathering data and submitting reports, Utah Valley University’s Math Lab and Peer Tutoring programs were recognized with the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) Distinguished Certification in its national conference recently held in Greensboro, N.C.
"This is a distinct honor and demonstrates that the services offered by these programs have met rigorous professional standards," said Maureen Andrade, associate dean of University College. "Certification demonstrates that the tutoring services are committed to serving students at the highest possible level."
UVU’s Kathryn Van Wagoner of the Math Lab, and Wendy Simmerman, who replaced Regie Holdaway as the manager of Peer Tutoring, accepted the certifications for the University.
The NADE certification process mandates applicants to document the use of quality practices as defined by research in the field of learning assistance. The application also demands programs to demonstrate the use of systematic assessment in order to facilitate continual improvement of services and student learning.
"Specifically, NADE certification requires that tutoring programs are based on theory from the discipline, show evidence of quality practice, and employ on-going assessment to analyze and improve student learning outcomes," Andrade said.
The NADE highlighted the variety of services within the UVU tutoring centers that support different student needs and learning styles, and the excellent training programs in place for tutors, which led to the certification. In addition, NADE recognized the quality of the University’s Tutoring and Training Handbook used in the Peer Tutoring program.
"These aspects reflect positively on the management of the programs and lead to good customer service. The programs also demonstrate solid student learning outcomes," Andrade said.
The Math Lab and Peer Tutoring programs join The Writing Center, which was honored on 1997, to receive certification from the NADE.
