Rona Rahlf, president and publisher of the Daily Herald, will address students and community members on the evolving media industry Thursday at noon in Utah Valley University’s Ragan Theater. Rahlf’s remarks are in connection with the Reed & Christine Halladay Executive Lecture Series, a weekly event administered by UVU’s Woodbury School of Business.
"Rona Rahlf is locally and nationally acclaimed as an expert in the media business," said Randall Beckham, assistant dean for development in the Woodbury School of Business. "We are delighted that she will share a few thoughts with our students and the community. Her perspectives on business, particularly the news business, will provide great context for our students."
The event is part of an upper-division class for UVU business students, and it is free and open to the public, as well. In addition to Rahlf’s lecture, students hear business leaders discuss their industries and keys to success each Thursday as part of the for-credit course.
"This lecture series has been received enthusiastically by our students, as well as others who have attended," said Ian Wilson, dean of the Woodbury School of Business. "It’s good for our students to learn business principles in the classroom and then hear how successful businesspeople apply them in the real world. For that same reason, it’s our experience that community members have also found the lectures to be quite valuable."
A publishing group leader for Lee Enterprises, the parent company for the Daily Herald, Rahlf began her career in newspapers by selling advertising for a Montana paper in 1987. In 1996, she became advertising director for the Billings Gazette, and in 2000 she and three other Lee classified managers in Montana received the company’s President’s Award for creating the statewide "Work For You" employment publication. In 2002, she was appointed regional director of human resources for Lee newspapers in Montana and Wyoming.
Prior to joining the Daily Herald, Rahlf was publisher of The Montana Standard in Butte, Mont., as well as several weekly and monthly publications in Bozeman, Mont. Since 2007, she has served as a group publisher for Lee, with responsibilities extending to Auburn, N.Y., and Carlisle, Pa. She was named publisher of the Daily Herald and president of Pulitzer Utah Newspapers in July 2008.
