UVU will host the Great West Conference inaugural Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday November 1 at 9 a.m.
OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University men’s and women’s cross country teams will conclude their seasons Saturday as they will host the inaugural Great West Conference Cross Country Championships at Lakeside Park beginning at 9 a.m.
“This will mark the first conference championship in the history of the new league, and we are very excited to be putting on this event for the student-athletes,” GWC Commissioner Ed Grom said. “The staff at Utah Valley University has done a wonderful job preparing for this championship, which should be the peak of the season for the competing student-athletes and coaches from each Great West institution.”
The women’s 6K race will begin the festivities at 9 a.m. and the men’s 8K race will follow at 10 a.m. Following the races the award ceremonies will conclude the championships at 11 a.m. Admission will be free to the public.
“I have a lot of excitement for Saturday for a number of reasons,” UVU head cross country coach Scott Houle said. “It’s our school’s first conference championship, the first GWC Championship, and it is definitely a great opportunity for our school, community, and the athletic department to be hosting. The competition level will be very high, and overall it will be a fun day.”
The GWC consists of seven schools, all of which will be in attendance. Those schools include Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas-Pan American, and UVU.
The Championships will be held at Lakeside Park located only 1.5 miles from Utah Valley’s campus. The address is 1850 W. 400 South, Orem, Utah. Lakeside Park is a large softball and soccer complex located just off of Geneva Road in West Orem.
The starting lines for both men’s and women’s races will be next to the parking lot at the southern most point of the park. The finish line will be directly to the west of the parking lot pavilion. For more detailed information on the courses see the attached photos.
