Sederburg Applauds 'Community Engaged' Classification Given to Weber State and Utah Valley Universities

UVU and WSU only Utah institutions to receive this honor administered by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

SALT LAKE CITY - William A. Sederburg, Commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE), commended Utah Valley University (UVU) and Weber State University (WSU) for achieving the classification of a "community engaged" university. The announcement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recognizes 119 higher education institutions across the nation.

"This classification is an important component to the success of our state’s regional universities," observed Commissioner Sederburg, "The recognition is a strong statement about the schools’ commitment to public engagement and regional service."

"The Board of Regents appreciates the current leadership of these institutions," continued Sederburg, "This classification illustrates the critical role our institutions play in the vitality of the communities and regions they serve."

In order to be classified "Community Engaged" by the Carnegie Foundation, institutions provide documented examples of institutionalized practices of community engagement. More than just involvement in a community, institutions must exhibit an alignment of mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices.
