Eight UVU students recently participated in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest arts festival held annually in Edinburgh, Scotland.
This was UVU’s first year performing in the festival, which features drama, comedy, dance and music, and encourages all types and genres of performance, from classical to contemporary. The students performed a new translation of “Flies in the Snuffbox,” a compilation of four comic one-act plays by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.
“It was an incredible opportunity for our students to be part of this international festival,” said Christopher Clark, assistant professor of Theatrical Arts at UVU. “It's difficult to travel a show—especially when you are taking it overseas. We had to be smart and economical about costuming, sets, and props, as well as rehearsal space. One evening we had to rehearse in a Scottish alley-way!”
Despite limited resources, however, UVU’s performance received good reviews and was spotlighted as a must-see on the "Best of the Fest" Web site associated with the festival.
“In the end, the experience was absolutely rewarding and our show was well-received,” said Clark. “This was a hard-working, talented group of actors who care about their education and their craft. I look forward to our students getting more opportunities like this in the future.”
The UVU students who participated were Joe Spear, from Provo; Alex Ungerman, from Provo; Scott Stringham, from Springville, Utah; Alta Stringham, from Springville, Utah; Jana Grass, from Springville, Utah; Jacob Squire, from West Valley City, Utah; Anne Mangum, from Salt Lake City and Jaclyn Hales, from North Salt Lake, Utah.
