With the uncertain economy causing jobs to become more competitive, Utah Valley University is offering classes at off-campus sites and Weekend College to provide flexible schedules for working students to build up their educational background and become more competitive in the workforce. Registration is now open for spring semester classes starting Jan. 7.
Approximately 1,700 students took advantage of Weekend College and the wide variety of courses it offers in the fall semester. Weekend College is held on the main Orem campus and consists of Friday evening and Saturday morning classes. The Friday evening schedule includes courses in general education, arts, history, math, business management and physical education. Saturday’s courses include six hybrid courses in Spanish and math which include an internet component as well as scheduled class time with the instructor.
"I am grateful that UVU has embraced the non-traditional student population," said Floyd Clark, a UVU student. "Without them I would never have been able to complete my degree."
In addition to Weekend College, UVU has off-campus sites located in Lehi (UVU North), Spanish Fork (UVU South) and Orem (UVU West) that are designed to help working students complete their degrees around their busy schedules. UVU North, located at Lehi Junior High School, offers 17 evening courses. At UVU South, located at Spanish Fork High School, 26 evening courses are available. And UVU West, located at the National Guard Building west of UVU’s main campus, offers 79 day and evening courses.
Students have the choice to learn from more than 80 courses at UVU’s Weekend College and off-campus sites. On a classroom experience survey, one UVU Weekend College student said, "Sleeping in is over-rated. Wake up and learn something."
