The University College (UC) Honors program at Utah Valley University is now providing housing for their honors students. In partnership with Ventana apartments, qualified honors students can now live there with a rent discount.
Currently, the entire second floor of Ventana is reserved for students in the program. In fall 2009, the program plans to add the first floor. Honors students being housed at Ventana were chosen through a competitive UC housing scholarship application process. Students had to write a three-page essay, be admitted to the program and have academic excellence. Out of the 308 honors students enrolled this Fall, 36 have been accepted for honors housing and will begin moving in August 19.
“Having the opportunity to offer housing has opened the program up as a genuine player in a state with many universities,” said Tiffany Nez, program coordinator of university college honors program. “We have students who are offered tuition scholarships and then when we offer them a housing scholarship too, we prove our credibility as a university committed to the student and our desire of having them on our campus.”
More students have been applying to the UC Honors program. This year, they received 250 applications, the highest amount the program has ever received. Only 65 students are accepted each academic year in order to keep honors courses small and give students direct and personal access to their professors.
Besides housing, other benefits the UC Honors program provides are priority registration for all honors students, smaller classes, advising and mentoring from honors professors, cultural events and social gatherings.
