UVU’s 14th annual Ethics Awareness week features more than 20 events of panel discussions, presentations and lectures Sept. 15-19 and is open to the public. The Center for the Study of Ethics at UVU is hosting the events where a variety of topics will be discussed ranging from ethics in war, food handling, electronic devices in classrooms, wolf conservation and Utah’s Latino community.
Those participating in the events are mostly UVU faculty and staff, but also include professors of other universities, students, authors, poets, reporters and community members. “We have invited many guests to campus over the past 14 years to share their perspectives on ethics,” said Elaine Englehardt, UVU distinguished professor of ethics. “We've tried to open the campus to the community in numerous ways.”
Ethics Awareness Week is a place for students, faculty and community members to discuss ethical issues that come up in different professions and aspects. “There’s a lot of responsibility to being a well-educated person and a contributing member of democracy. We face many public policy issues where we need to get together to talk about them in a collegiate and civil manner,” said David Keller, director of UVU’s Center for the Study of Ethics. “I hope everyone will come together in public forms to discuss ethical topics that confront us and to learn something about the issues.”
One noteworthy event will be keynote speaker, Laura Hamblin who won the first University Fellowship in Ethics Award. The ethics center supported her sabbatical last year where she lived in refugee camps in Jordan. She will speak on her experiences and the human ethics of displacement in war. Her speech is Sept. 16, at 11:30 a.m. in SC 213b. Another event includes Christine Durham, chief justice, Supreme Court of Utah, who will speak at the Constitution day commemoration Sept. 17. Her address, “Regulating Ethical Behavior in a Just Society,” will be at 7 p.m. in LI 120. A presentation of the annual Excellence in Ethics Award given to Durham will also take place.
