UVU Hosts Fourth Annual Global Engagement Week

Utah Valley University will host the fourth annual Global Engagement Week (GEW) Nov. 16 to 21. The event will expose students, faculty and staff to a variety of international speakers, food, photography and dancing.

"We have almost 650 international students from over 75 countries and over 70 international faculty and staff," said Steve Crook, assistant director of the international center. "GEW celebrates the diversity we have at UVU, while spotlighting our international resources and programs."

GEW is a part of the worldwide International Education Week (IEW), which provides students with the opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. IEW is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. It was created in an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

"Every GEW event is designed to help UVU students gain a deeper understanding of cultural, political and economic interdependencies that are going on in the world and around us," said Maryna V. Storrs, program coordinator for the Office of International Affairs and Diplomacy. "Long gone are the days when graduates of the U.S. universities could afford cultural ignorance. Today's reality is that every successful graduate needs to be able to integrate into the global community be it in a professional or personal context."

The GEW celebration is a joint effort among the Office of International Affairs and Diplomacy, the International Center, the Multicultural Center and the Orem Institute of Religion. For more information or a list of the events, visit: http://www.uvu.edu/intlaffairs/events/global.html.
