UVU’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble and Resonance Story Theatre will present in concert the original work, "Mockingbird Fly," 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at the Ragan Theater.
"Mockingbird Fly" will be performed as a part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program through a grant awarded to the Orem City Library. The original work is written by Resonance Theatre Director Wendy Gourley, directed by Nannette Watts and choreographed under the direction of Contemporary Dance Ensemble’s artistic director Doris Hudson de Trujillo.
"Mockingbird Fly" is a program that weaves story, dance, music, multi-media, drumming and theater into a presentation that looks at race issues and people who have forwarded the cause of freedom and rights for all, such as Atticus Finch, Martin Luther King Jr. and others. Directors and writers hope to inspire viewers to take a look at rising above the perceptions and problems of race, through this performance piece, and motivate us to pick up the cause of social justice until all are free to fly.
In addition to Hudson-Trujillo, choreographers include UVU faculty Angela Banchero-Kelleher and Sarah Donohue. The diverse cast of performers includes Wendy Gourley, UVU assistant professor Chris Clark and students from UVU’s Department of Theatrical Arts, Contemporary Dance Ensemble and the Multicultural Center.
"Mockingbird Fly" is sponsored by the UVU Multicultural Center, the Department of Dance and the newly formed UVU School of Arts. The project is funded in part by an Orem City Care Grant.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Ssejinja Children’s Foundation Medical Aids Clinic in Africa. Tickets for the concert are available in advance at Campus Connection, (801) 863-8797, or at the door. Tickets are $10 for students and faculty and $12 for general public.
