Body Image Psychologist Presents Workshop

Nicole Hawkins, clinical director of the Center For Change located in Orem, will present information about the media influence on body image and eating disorder issues as part of the Utah Valley State College Student Health Services Wellness Program Workshop Nov. 7 at noon in Centre Stage of the Sorensen Student Center.

“There are so many outside factors that influence how we see ourselves,” said Emily Jones, assistant coordinator of the wellness program. “Nicole Hawkins will discuss how people can be critical of those influences. She knows how to help people focus on what is realistically attainable and how to have a healthier look at their bodies.”

Hawkins received her Ph.D. in Clinical/Counseling Psychology from Utah State University in 1999, and has focused on women's issues, eating disorders, depression and anxiety. Hawkins is a regular presenter on body image and the treatment of eating disorders. She developed a comprehensive body image program that focuses on the media, diet industry, plastic surgery, childhood issues and learning to appreciate one's body. She has recently published several articles on the media and how this relates to eating disorders and presents nationally at conferences.

The event is free and open to the public.
