UVSC Students Bring Home Grammys

Six Utah Valley State College students recently returned from New York having won several awards in the Audio Engineering Society’s annual Student Grammy Award Competition.

This is the fourth year UVSC’s digital media students have participated in the competition. They have brought home top-three finishes every year and first place finishes three out of four years.

“This really brings home the fact that we can win awards against some very major and well-funded competitors,” said Mike Wisland, professor of digital media. “I think one school had a mixing board that costs more than our whole program, so these were some of the top programs from around the world. But our students were able to take what they learned here and compete.”

Craig Sowby, from Pleasant Grove, Utah, took first place in Pop/Rock and second place in Folk/Jazz. For the first time UVSC also had two students – Sean Wolsey, from Springville, Utah and Jeremy Redd, from Provo – participate in the hardware design competition and took third place in Circuit Design. Miles Fulwider from Pleasant Grove, Utah, Rob Merritt from Woodland Hills, Utah and Andy Porter from Provo also participated in the competition.

All of the students had a chance to meet Les Paul, a pioneer in the music industry, and see him play the electric guitar he invented more than 60 years ago. Paul, age 92, also left the students with autographed DVDs of his PBS special.

Funding and support for the trip was provided by the Perkins Grant and its administrators in UVSC’s Career and Technical Education.
