UVSC Hosts Annual Consotium for Computing Sciences

Recently, UVSC hosted the Sixteenth Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges: Rocky Mountain Conference. The conference was held in the Computer Science Building and was attended by members of the Rocky Mountain Conference, as well as several students from institutions throughout the Rocky Mountain States.

The Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges is a non-profit organization that, among other things, promotes the development of computer science, information system, and information technology programs in small colleges and universities like UVSC. It also creates an environment for professors and students to share research and new ideas, as well as become acquainted with their peers. The location of the conference rotates every year. Sponsors of this year’s event included Addison Wesley, Thomson Course Technology, Microsoft, Pearson Prentice Hall, RidgeSoft, and Wiley.

The keynote speaker for the conference was internationally renowned software developer Alistair Cockburn, who spoke to attendees about how to teach the next generation software engineering. Gordon Stokes, assistant to the dean of the School of Technology and Computing at UVSC, was also a featured speaker, and spoke on the history of computing. UVSC computer science major Chris Carey of Springville, Utah was given an award for a paper that he co-authored with Dave Heldenbrand, professor of computer science at UVSC.

Pat Ormond, professor of computer information and technology at UVSC, acted as the site chair for this year’s Rocky Mountain Conference, organizing much of the event with the help of UVSC faculty. “We’re grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to welcome other faculty to our institution. It’s important that we engage as faculty and learn what other peer institutions are doing to help teach their students. We all get a lot of good ideas at conferences like these.”

Next year’s Rocky Mountain Conference will be held in Colorado.
