Three Writers to Read in UVSC's Guest Author Reading Series

On Friday, September 28, UVSC will welcome writers Charles Bowden, Scott Carrier and Alex Caldiero in what Lee Mortensen, professor of English, calls a “not-to-miss triple-play literary event.” The event, which is part of UVSC’s Guest Author Reading Series, is titled “Leave to Enter: Border Transgressions and Trespasses,” and will begin at 12 p.m. in rooms 206a and 206b in the Student Center.

Charles Bowden is a writer from Tucson, Ariz., and is considered to be one of the premier writers on the American environment and social issues along the border between Mexico and the U.S. His recent works include “A Shadow in the City: Confessions of an Undercover Drug Warrior” and “Blood Orchid: An Unnatural History of America.”

Scott Carrier is an independent radio producer and writer from Salt Lake City. Carrier’s radio stories have been broadcast on nationally-recognized radio programs such as “All Things Considered,” and his print stories have been published in“Harper’s Bazaar,” “Esquire” and “Rolling Stone.”

Alex Caldiero is presently a resident of Orem, Utah. He came to Utah from Sicily by way of Brooklyn and is well-known for his performance works, integrating poetry with music, dance and art. He has performed at the New School for Social Research, the Pritchard Art Gallery and the Salt Lake Art Center and is the author of the collections “Book o’ Lights” and “Various Atmospheres: Poems and Drawings.”

“These three writers are so very different,” remarks Mortensen, “but they are also so important and so brave in the approaches they take to critique the wrongs of this country and its art. They also sing their language beautifully.”

The reading is co-sponsored by the Communications Department, Integrated Studies and Happenings in Humanities. It is free and open to the public.
