Utah Valley State College President William A. Sederburg, along with representatives from eight other regional universities from across the country, will meet Sept. 23 to 26 as part of the Oxford Conclave. UVSC is hosting the conclave this year at the Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah.
The Oxford Conclave has met for the past two years in Oxford, England to devise ways of integrating ethics, global awareness and leadership. It was started by Betty Siegel, former President of Kennesaw State University, Georgia. The participating schools were selected to represent the broad spectrum of the nation’s regional public universities. The schools are University of Alaska-Anchorage, Kennesaw State University, Georgia State University, East Carolina University, University of North Dakota, Utah Valley State College, College of Staten Island, University of West Georgia and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"The primary purpose of the Conclave this year is to identify best practices in promoting ethics, global awareness and leadership, and then determine how best to achieve the desired results,” said President Sederburg. “The result will be a publication to be used by regional universities. Each school will be presenting their best practices and lessons learned since the conclave began.”
UVSC will be presenting ethics across the curriculum, as well as its Presidential Leadership and Communities of Engaged Learners programs. A writing team of individuals from the universities attending the conclave will compile the best practices in global ethical leadership and social responsibility for publication.
Presenters at the conclave include Steven R. Covey, author of many publications on leadership, Tim Clark, author of “Epic Change in a Global Environment”, Mike Young, president of the University of Utah, Richard Kendell, Utah commissioner of Higher Education and David Keller, director of the UVSC Ethics Center.
The conclave meets annually, developing a statement of beliefs and responsibilities the first year and last year discussing the practical application of those beliefs and responsibilities. A copy of the “Statement of Beliefs and Responsibilities” drafted by the consortia of universities is included.
