UVSC will commemorate U.S. Constitution Day on Monday, September 17. This year marks the 220th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. “Without this event taking place, we all wouldn’t be at school,” said Dr. Odell Miner, lecturer in the Department of History and Political Science.
UVSC Student government will host a series of events, with a keynote address by noted constitutional law scholar, Akhil Reed Amar, September 17 at 11 a.m. in the Ragan Theater.
Amar is the southmayd professor of law and political science at Yale University, where he teaches constitutional law. In 1997, Amar was awarded an honorary doctorate by Suffolk University. In 1995, the National Law Journal named him one of 40 “Rising Stars in Law,” and in 1997 The “American Lawyer” placed him on their “Public Sector 45” list. He has delivered lectures at more than two dozen colleges and universities and has written widely in newspapers, magazines and has published many books. Amar is also the author of several books, including “The Constitution and Criminal Procedure: First Principles” (Yale Univ. Press, 1997).
Following the keynote address flags and samples of the constitution and live video of student representatives interviewing students about the Constitution will be shown on TVs throughout the school.
Increasing student awareness about the Constitution and how it affects our daily lives is the very reason we present this every year,” said Miner. “It’s great to incorporate such a historical significant movement with a fun twist for the students and public.”
The event goes from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Monday, September 17, in the Ragan Theater at UVSC, located in the Sorensen Student Center. The event is free and open to students and the public.
