Opportunity Quest Business Competition Winners Announced

Opportunity Quest, a business innovation competition for UVSC students, recently held a special dinner to recognize Opportunity Quest competitors and to announce the winners of the Opportunity Quest Competition.

In November, the students presented their business plans to a panel of judges. The teams were assisted in developing their business proposals with workshops, forums and mentors provided by the Entrepreneurship Institute in the School of Business.

“The competition fosters and promotes business growth at the college level by giving students a chance to organize, direct and present a business concept. It’s a great opportunity for students who are interested in entrepreneurship,” said Silvia Lobendahn, Entrepreneurship Institute Assistant of the Woodbury School of Business.

That night, first place was awarded to Nunemaker Construction & Consulting, consisting of team members Joe Nunemaker, from Brentwood, CA and Andy Welchwith from Sandy, UT. They received a $2,000 cash award. They plan to open their business up in Pleasant Grove. Second place was awarded to QuickLine Transcriptions, consisting of team members Mark Shinoda and Matthew Mendel who are both originally from Santa Ana, CA. They walked away with $600. They plan to open their corporate headquarters in Virginia. Third place went to the company Intern to Executive. Team members included Bancroft Bernard from Tampa, FL, Lindsay Tanner from Cottonwood Heights, UT and Shawn Lucas and Frank Carter from Brooklyn, NY. They received $600 and plan to open their company in Provo next year. The semi-finalists of the competition were Hillary Sweets, which was led by Hillary Kirkman from North Logan, UT and Build It Connect which was led by Joshua Solomon from Salem, UT and Joshua Davis from Highland, UT. Each received between $100 to $300. Other awards included office space in the Student Incubator at UVSC, telephone lines, Internet, copy and fax access in the UVSC Student Incubator.

Any student at UVSC can enter the competition, which is held every year. All teams must be organized and directed by a UVSC student. The competition is presented by UVSC’s Woodbury School of Business Entrepreneur’s Club.
