Utah Valley State College will host a Business Plan Competition, giving students a chance to organize, direct and present a business idea to a panel of judges for the chance to implement their ideas and receive a cash reward. The deadline for students to register for the competition is Nov. 10, with the final proposals due by Jan. 28. The proposals will be judged by a committee and five finalists will be named Feb. 4. Those finalists will automatically qualify for the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge in 2008, a statewide business plan competition.
In 2004, Michael Stebinger, a UVSC business student at the time, participated and received national recognition for his business Tropi-Cool, Inc., a Latin style ice cream parlor that specializes in producing authentic Mexican paletas, fresh fruit bars, fresh fruit drinks and ice cream.
“He went all the way and won the Global Student Entrepreneur Award. The awarded money provided capital for his business and he was recognized as one of the top entrepreneurs in the country,” said Silvia Lobendahn, assistant to the Entrepreneurship Institute at UVSC. “The UVSC Business Plan Competition helps students start their own business and the further they go with their business plan in the competition, the more money they get.”
The prize for first place is $3,000, second and third place receive $1,000, fourth through tenth each receive $100, with other awards including such things as office space in the UVSC Student Incubator providing telephone lines, internet, copy and fax access.
Anyone can participate in the competition, but must include as at least one UVSC student as part of their team. Teams are assisted in developing their business proposals with workshops, forums and mentors provided by the Entrepreneurship Institute in the School of Business. The Entrepreneurship Institute directs the competition, which involves student volunteers, a team of directors –corporate professionals – as well as UVSC faculty members.
