UVSC to Receive Money From the State Land Trust Fund for Teacher Education

The State Office of Education State of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration will deliver a check for approximately $32,400 to UVSC President William A. Sederburg September 5 at 10.30 a.m. in the Presidential Suite. The money comes from revenues generated by trust lands operated for the benefit of state run colleges and universities with teacher education programs.

There are 3.4 million acres of Utah trust lands that are managed in the financial interest of 12 beneficiaries, including Utah's colleges of education. Trust lands were granted to Utah in connection with statehood in 1896. At that time there was only one public college of education and that was at the University of Utah. With the help of Sen. Tom Hatch, R-Panquitch, this will be the first year the money will be distributed to all six public institutions of higher education that educate teachers.

“I am pleased to deliver the first in what will be a perpetual stream of income to Utah Valley State College for its college of education,” says Kevin Carter, director of the State of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration. “There will be a distribution to UVSC every year from now on to assist in funding the education of teachers. No money we generate could go to a more worthy cause.”

The money that UVSC is receiving is based on the number of graduates that the school of education had in 2005. UVSC graduated the fourth largest number of teachers in Utah that year. The money is given to the school and is spent at the discretion of the president.
