Football Coach Depicted in "Remember the Titans" to Speak at UVSC

Herman Boone, the original TC Williams High School football coach made famous by the Disney production, “Remember the Titans,” will be coming to UVSC September 13 to give a speech titled, “Remember the Titans: Conflict Resolution and Unity.” Boone’s presentation will take place in UVSC’s Grande Ballroom in the Sorensen Student Center at noon. The event is free and open to the public.

In the midst of segregation and racism in Alexandria, Virginia, resulting from the conjoining of black and white high schools in the area, Boone overcame color barriers and unified a football team of mixed races. As a result, Boone’s 1971 Titans went on to accumulate a 13-0 record and a Virginia state championship.

“I think his life example and accomplishments make him a great role model for everyone,” said J.P. Spagnolo, coordinator of student leadership at UVSC. “He’s talking about bringing a community together, and that’s something everyone can benefit from.”

Disney’s film “Remember the Titans” will be shown in the Grande Ballroom at UVSC September 12 at 8 p.m. The cost is $1.
