Survey Tells Job Satisfaction Level of UVSC Staff

Results of a recent survey show insight into the job satisfaction levels of UVSC staff. The survey, conducted by UVSC behavioral science seniors, was created to find out the overall perspective of UVSC employees.

“The idea was to have our own hands on primary research of how faculty and staff view their experience at UVSC,” said Ron Hammond, professor of sociology. “We wanted to know what UVSC is doing that is working, what UVSC can do better and what UVSC should stop doing.”

The survey was divided into five core dimensions that UVSC employees experience in the workplace, focusing on the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and financial aspects. Of 480 respondents, 84 percent feel they “continue to learn new things about their job,” 72 percent feel they “are positively influencing lives of people through their work,” 78 percent “really like their job” and 84 percent are “highly satisfied with their lives.”

Although 83 percent claimed they like the fringe benefits of their job (work environment, learning opportunities, reasonable work hours), 75 percent claimed to be “highly dissatisfied with pay,” a common concern among many state colleges.

“The survey was not only successful in findings about staff perspective, but also gave behavioral science students a chance to create a professional survey,” Hammond said.

The survey’s success was significant, inspiring President Sederburg to implement the survey as an annual practice. Every year students will have the opportunity to work on the survey, and effects of the changes made to UVSC’s work environment will be tracked over the coming years.
