Medieval Festival to be Held at UVSC

The fourth annual Utah Medieval Festival will be held at UVSC Oct. 13-14 on the fields in front of the McKay Events Center. More than 1,500 people attended this event last year, with even more expected this year.

“The area outside of the McKay Center will be transformed to create an authentic medieval festival,” said Barbara Hammond, assistant dean for external relations for the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences at UVSC. “Our goal is to recreate a family experience with the fun and merriment of medieval times.”

The festival will include a signing of the Magna Carta reenactment and tournament, sword fighting, juggling, children’s games and medieval food, songs and dancing. There will also be costumed vendors selling medieval wares, Chaucer reenactments by UVSC theater students, medieval poetry readings, demonstrations of calligraphy by the Utah Calligraphy Association and a pavilion with displays and presentations from the Society for Creative Anachronisms.

The festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. An authentic medieval feast will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Centre Stage in the Sorensen Center.

Tickets for the festival are $3 for adults, $2 for students with ID and $1 for children ages 4-11. Admission is free for children 3 and under, and a family pass for immediate family members (up to 6 persons) will be available for $8. All tickets can be purchased at the entrance to the festival. A separate ticket of $15 for the medieval feast can be purchased at Campus Connection, (801) 863-8797, beginning Monday, Oct. 2.

In addition to the two-day festival, UVSC will present Medieval Movie Night, featuring “A Knight’s Tale” in the courtyard outside of the Sorensen Student Center, Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. General public is welcome.

The event is presented by The School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, along with Utah Medieval Festival founder Karen Martin and Darin Anderson of Lords of the Lance. For more information on the festival, go to www.utahmedfest.com/press.html.
