Scholar to Discuss Business Ethics at UVSC
Ethics scholar Rick Keller will address UVSC students, faculty, staff and community members Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in room 206C of the Sorensen Student Center. He will share his findings on business ethics and corporate social responsibility, a study which he conducted in 2005.
“What Keller will talk about is relevant not only to business students and faculty but also to members of the community,” said David Keller, director of the Center for the Study of Ethics. “The people of Utah County should be concerned with the ethics of local businesses because their ethical judgments have repercussions throughout the community.”
Keller sent surveys to 1,100 business professionals asking about the conditions that cause employees to exercise poor ethical judgment. From the surveys, the no. 1 reason people were most likely to compromise their ethical standards was pressure to meet unrealistic business objectives and deadlines. Keller’s discussion of business ethics and corporate responsibility will specifically site how the collapse of Enron not only affected the business, but families and members of the community as well.
Currently, Keller serves as executive-in-residence with the University of Tampa’s Human Resource Institute. In addition to his address at UVSC, he will also speak at the Annual Business Ethics and Compliance Conference in Salt Lake City. The event is free and open to the public.
