Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) Founder to be Honored at UVSC

The UVSC Center for the Study of Ethics will host J.P. “Chief” Lilly, Utah native and founder of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), as the feature speaker for October’s Monthly Ethic’s Forum Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Losee Center LC 243. Prior to Lilly’s speaking, President William A. Sederburg will present the BACA founder with the Excellence in Ethics Award at a reception in his honor from 6 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Lilly, adjunct faculty in Brigham Young University’s graduate school of social work and a licensed clinical social worker, specializes in working with children using play therapy, an expressive form of therapy that uses play to diagnose and treat clinical problems. In 1995, Lilly organized BACA, a non-profit organization of motorcyclists around the United States (and now Australia), in an effort to create a safer environment for children who have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused.

“J.P. was an ideal choice for this award because he has gone out of his way and made a commitment and an effort to deal with the problem of child abuse,” said David Keller, director of the UVSC Ethics Center. “He symbolizes grass-roots ethical activism.”

Roger Wise, chair of secondary education at UVSC, has been a member of BACA for the past four years. He and members of the other 90 chapters around the United States and Australia, volunteer to help children feel safe and recover from abuse. Wise said members have been known to sleep in the children’s front yards when the children can’t sleep, act as escorts for them, attend their hearings or even pay for counseling.

“It’s very rewarding to see kids getting through these problems and functioning well,” Wise said. “They know that they’re safe.”
