UVSC to Break Ground for New Library
Utah Valley State College will host a groundbreaking ceremony as construction begins at the site of the College’s new library on the northeast side of campus September 6 at 10:30 a.m. Because of the support given for the project by the Utah State legislature, many officials are expected to attend the event, including Utah County resident and Lieutenant Governor Gary Herbert.
"This building is important on three levels, said UVSC President William A. Sederburg. “First, it helps provide a state-of-the-art learning facility consistent with other state universities, second, it helps alleviate space needs on campus and third, it helps define the school as putting academics and learning as our top priority."
In March, UVSC was granted $46.75 million from the state legislature for the project, representing the largest amount of one-time funding that UVSC has ever received from the state. UVSC anticipates completion of the project by Spring 2009. The new library, or Digital Learning Center (DLC), will combine traditional library services with cutting-edge technology to meet the demands of today’s and future students. Included in the plans are group study rooms, a commons area with more than 140 computers where students can access the latest in computer software packages, as well as expanded collections and an extended hours area. The technology housed in the DLC will be available for all UVSC students, whether attending classes at the main campus in Orem, the Wasatch campus or any of UVSC’s satellite campuses.
"This new library comes about because of the strong support of our legislators, the Governor and the greater UVSC community," President Sederburg said.
As a crucial step toward achieving university status, the DLC will have a profound impact on UVSC’s ability to meet the academic needs of a growing student body. Upon completion, the DLC will be available to the community and will also be a great educational asset for residents of Utah County. The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public with parking available in Lot M, just north of the Liberal Arts Building (a parking attendant will direct visitors to designated areas).
