Percussion Ensemble Performs at UVSC
The halls of the Sorensen Student Center will rock as the UVSC Percussion Ensemble plays its own concert Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Centre Stage. The concert will be directed by Dr. David Fullmer and will feature guest artist Michael Huestis.
The percussion ensemble, founded five years ago by Fullmer, is comprised of 12 talented UVSC students. True to its name, the ensemble plays nothing but percussion instruments. More than 50 different instruments will be played during the concert, including UVSC’s new five-octave marimba.
“It’s quite an eclectic mix of music,” Fullmer said. “It’s almost schizophrenic. We’ll be doing pieces by Haydn and Schubert, and also some things that don’t resemble classical music at all. It’s a very appealing form of music that most everyone should like.”
Guest artist Michael Huestis will also play with the ensemble on the steel drum, Congo drums and the rudimental snare. Huestis has been involved in percussion performance and education for years, and is currently an instructor at American Fork junior and senior high schools. In addition to teaching percussion, Huestis is a Dynasty, Vic Firth and Evans Clinician and is currently serving as the Utah Chapter President of Percussive Arts Society.
The concert will be held at Centre Stage in the Student Center is approximately one hour in length. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information on the UVSC Percussion Ensemble, contact the Music Department at (801) 863-8347.
