UVSC Student Recognized for Audio Engineering Skills
Converting his house into a recording studio finally paid off for UVSC student Craig Sowby, who was recently awarded first place in the pop/rock genre for a song he recorded, mixed, mastered and submitted to the 121st Audio Engineering Society’s (AES) International Student Recording Competition in San Francisco.
Sowby, a senior at UVSC majoring in music and integrated studies (music and office management), developed a passion for recording as a sophomore. After taking two recording classes at the College, Sowby started recording concerts for the music department. Then he said he and his wife came up with a great idea: open a studio at home.
“I spent a whole bunch of money on equipment and transformed our house into a studio,” Sowby said. His studio, Corner House Studio in Pleasant Grove, Utah, is complete with a control room, tracking room, vocal room and lounge, covering the main floor of the Sowbys’ house.
Sowby said some of his equipment wouldn’t be considered top-of-the-line, but being awarded by the AES goes to show that he doesn’t need “all that stuff.”
Sowby is already building up his clientele as well. The artist he recorded for his submission to the AES competition was Bryon Friedman, a member of the U.S. Ski Team. Friedman, a passionate musician/athlete, was coming off of an injury he sustained training for the Olympics, which doctors predicted would keep him off skis for life. After making a miraculous recovery, Friedman got back on his skis and began training. His training brought him to Park City, Utah, his hometown, for three days, where he found Sowby through a google.com Web search and called him to record his album.
The AES is an international professional society dedicated to the growth and development of audio technology. The AES regularly holds conventions around the world to share the latest information in audio.
