US News & World Report: UVSC Graduates Acquire Less Debt

Utah Valley State College graduates incur the least amount of debt in the West among public institutions, according to U.S. News & World Report’s latest rankings. The study, released today, indicated that UVSC seniors graduate with an average debt of $9,046, compared to a national average of more than $19,000.

In 2003, the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington D.C. suggested graduate’s rising debt load was due in part to a trend of tuition increases, reporting that the last two decades saw tuition inflation surpassing the growth of median income and financial aid.

In October 2005 the College Board, a not-for-profit membership association of more than 5,000 educational organizations, reported that the average tuition and fees for four-year public universities was $5,491, up $1,566 from 2000. In comparison, UVSC’s 2006-2007 resident tuition is $1,654, $3,837 below last years’ reported national average.

U.S. News & World Report also listed UVSC in the 4th tier category for the Best Comprehensive Colleges offering bachelor degrees in the West.
