Ethics Center Discusses Resistance to War

The UVSC’s Center for the Study of Ethics will host Jeff Paterson, a former Marine Corporal and the first publicly known, active-duty military resistant in the Gulf War. Paterson will speak about his experiences in the armed forces and military life in a speech titled, “The Ethics of Passivism,” September 29 at 1 p.m. at Centre Stage in the Sorensen Student Center.

After four years of military service and following orders, Paterson refused to fight in the Gulf War. In August 1990, Paterson demonstrated his refusal by sitting on the airport runway and resisting deployment to the Middle East. Paterson has since been speaking nationwide to troops, would-be troops and youth about the ongoing turmoil in Iraq.

“Paterson is a very well-known and passionate speaker on his views of military life and America’s approach on the war in Iraq,” said Kathryn French, professor of behavioral science at UVSC. “The general community would be interested to hear what he has to say about the conscience of a combatant as they thoughtfully consider the full cost of war.”

Today, Paterson is working to build a movement of support for the growing number of military objectors to the current ongoing war and occupation of Iraq. Paterson has appeared on Larry King Live and CNN.

Admission is free and open to the public.
