UVSC Professor Recognized for His Best Practices
Professor Jim Callison’s Introduction to Environmental Management course received honors for best practices by the Center for Educational Policy Research. A study conducted on behalf of the College Board sought excellent college courses to aid in the reconfiguration of high school Advanced Placement environmental science courses.
Callison completed a 150-question survey that analyzed both the topics his class covers and the course documents he uses in the classroom. After a thorough analysis of his survey by a panel of national experts, the director of the study notified the UVSC’s dean of Sciences and Health about Professor Callison’s achievement.
“It’s not a major award,” Callison said. “Still, it feels good
to know that someone else thought that you were doing a good job.”The panel evaluated courses from 53 colleges throughout the United
States. Noteworthy elements from Professor Callison’s course and a
few other courses across the nation assisted in creating new
specifications and guidelines for courses, exams and teachers of AP
environmental science throughout the nation. Odile Stout, research
team leader for the Center for Educational Policy Research, said the
information from Professor Callison’s survey will help to create an
exemplary high school course.
“[UVSC] can take pride in faculty such as Mr. Callison and the contributions that faculty of this caliber make to improving educational practices nationally,” Stout said.
