Award-Winning Documentary “After Innocence” Shown at UVSC
In conjunction with the UVSC Death Penalty Seminar September 18-20, Reel Film presents “After Innocence,” a documentary directed and written by Jessica Sanders and produced by Sanders and Marc Simon. “After Innocence” will be shown September 14 at 7 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 101.
“After Innocence” tells the story of seven different men wrongly imprisoned for years, even decades, before being admitted back into society after DNA testing proves their innocence. The film discusses the effects of wrongful imprisonment and raises basic questions about human rights and society's moral obligation to the innocent.
Producer Marc Simon was a student at Benjamin N. Cardoze Law School and participated in the Innocence Project. The Project deals with cases where post conviction DNA testing of evidence can yield conclusive proof of innocence. It is the experience of the Innocence Project which inspired the filming of this documentary.
“This film reveals some of the fallacies involved in the investigation and prosecution of people accused of crimes they did not commit,” said Nancy Rushforth, organizer of the event and UVSC humanities coordinator.
"After Innocence” has won several awards at various film festivals including “Best Storytelling in a Documentary” at the Nantuket Film Festival in New York City and the “Audience Award” at the Independent Film Festival of Boston. Admission is free and open to the public.
