UVSC Professor Appointed ASM Scholar-In-Residence

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) in Washington, D.C., named UVSC Assistant Professor of Biology Ruhul Kuddus, as one of 15 yearlong ASM Scholars-In-Residence to advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Microbiology (SOTL).

Kuddus was chosen from a national pool of educators based on his experience and proposed research initiatives for SOTL regarding the improvement of microbiology teaching methods. Kuddus will present the data he collects at an ASM conference in New York next year.

“I feel that teaching can always be improved,” Kuddus said. “If someone is a great teacher why is she/he great? Other educators and their students would benefit from learning the methods great teachers apply. As a scholar-in-residence, I am testing some new methodologies in teaching microbiology and biology. If the methods work, I hope to publish and share the findings.”

In a letter announcing Kuddus appointment as an ASM Scholar-in-Residence, Neil R. Baker, chair of the Education Board for ASM said, “These Scholars are at the forefront of teaching excellence and student learning…They will play a vital role in better preparing students for a career in microbiology and for life that is increasingly dominated by advances in science and technology.”

As a scholar-in-residence, Kuddus will be conducting research individually at UVSC as well as with other ASM scholars at their respective institutions.
