UVSC Hosts Benefit Concert to Support Ugandan Orphans
Utah Valley State College will host a benefit concert featuring local artists for the Ssejinja Children’s Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by UVSC alumnus and Ugandan native David Ssejinja, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the UVSC Student Center Grande Ballroom. All proceeds will go towards helping orphans and widows in Uganda.
“The money will provide education and health care to improve the children’s welfare,” Ssejinja said. “People need to know there are problems in other areas of the world, many problems they can help to solve by donating time, resources and a caring heart.”
Ssejinja, who was orphaned due to civil unrest in Uganda, formed the non-profit charity organization in 1999 to help the children he left behind in Uganda. Since its inception, the foundation has created AIDS Awareness programs in villages and built schools and water wells in Uganda, in addition to providing personal items such as clothing, books and food.
“The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about AIDS, poverty and political problems in Uganda,” Ssejinja said. “However, the emphasis is to help with education programs for the orphans.”
The benefit concert will feature Alex Boye, John Cannon, Brandie Frampton, Aaron Johnson and One Voice Children’s Choir. A pre-show will begin at 7 p.m. with a presentation from Engineers without Borders from Utah State University, whose engineers recently traveled to villages in Uganda to assist in the construction of a water system. Prizes will be given out to guests throughout the evening.
Tickets are $12 for the general public and $10 for UVSC students and
faculty. Call Campus Connection at (801) 863-8797 to order tickets.
Tickets will also be available at the door.
