Summer Fire School at UVSC

The 40th annual Summer Fire School will be held August 18-19 at Utah Valley State College and the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) in Provo. Firefighters from around the state will have the opportunity to receive hands-on demonstrations and practical information from the 34 classes offered including Arson Detection for the First Responder, Fitness Training for Firefighters and Small Aircraft Fire Fighting and Safety Devises.

The UFRA was founded and situated as part of Utah Valley State's Fire Science Program as the sole provider of fire-related higher education to the firefighters of Utah and continues to be the main source of training for rural firefighters, as well as a resource for metropolitan fire departments.

“We’re bringing in trainers that Utah fire fighters wouldn’t otherwise be able to see to receive state-of-the-art training,” said Ray Brown, program manager at UFRA. “Summer school keeps getting larger and participants like what they learn and keep coming back. It’s great exposure to other fire departments’ ideas and thinking.”

Many of the instructors for the classes are retired fire chiefs and officers including the retired Fire Deputy Chief of New York. Four hands-on classes will be taught at the UFRA located at 3131 Mike Jense Parkway in Provo by the Provo Airport.

All 215 spots within the Fire Officers portion of fire school have been filled, so fire officers are encouraged to enroll in the variety of other classes being offered. To ensure the availability of classes, check the UFRA website or call the Academy directly. Check-in and registration will take place August 18 at 7 a.m. in the UVSC Grande Ballroom followed by the opening ceremony where Utah State Fire Marshal Ron Morris will speak. Tuition for two days of classes is $80 and attendees can choose from 34 class options.
