Eating Disorder Specialist to Speak at UVSC
Dr. Nicole Hawkins from the Center for Change eating disorder clinic in Orem will speak to students and faculty Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. at Centre Stage. The topic of her speech will be “False Advertising, the Media and Body Image,” and is sponsored by the UVSC Wellness Education Department.
“With the holidays and finals coming up, this is the perfect time to have someone like Dr. Hawkins speak to our students,” said Amy Grubbs, wellness education coordinator for Student Health Services. “Eating disorders are a huge problem in the United States, and our campus is no exception.”
Hawkins’ lecture will focus on how to have a healthy body and a realistic self-image without comparing oneself to the unrealistic and unhealthy body images portrayed in the media. This is the third year Hawkins has spoken to the community at UVSC, and her lectures are always popular and well attended by both men and women.
“Everyone thinks that eating disorders affect only women,” Grubbs said. “But there are usually more men than women who come up after our workshop and tell us they have a problem. It’s important that we educate people on how to deal with eating disorders so they can not only help themselves but help their family and friends as well.”
Centre Stage is located in the Sorensen Student Center on the UVSC campus. The event is free and open to the public.
