UVSC to host U.S. Ambassador of Guatemala
The Office of International affairs and the Butler Institute for International Understanding will host his Excellency José Guillermo Castillo, Ambassador of Guatemala to the U.S. Castillo will be speaking November 20 at 11 a.m. in the Liberal Arts building, room 225.
Castillo will address the competition for the Latin America spot on the United Nations Security Council Guatemala recently had with Venezuela. With a two-thirds vote required to win, the two nations were deadlocked for several rounds of voting in the U.N. General Assembly. With both parties showing no sign of withdrawal, Panama was eventually elected on November 7 as a compromise choice between Venezuela and U.S.-backed Guatemala. Castillo will also discuss Guatemala and U.S. relations.
Ambassador Castillo previously served as minister and vice minister of economy in charge of trade issues. While serving as a delegate of the Ministry of Economy, he also coordinated and completed negotiations for a free trade agreement with Mexico.
“Because of experiences with Utahans in Guatemala, Castillo has had a desire to become acquainted with Utah’s government, culture, religions and economics” said Rusty Butler, associate vice president of International Affairs. “Utah has always had a fairly large Guatemalan population, and an interest in international affairs with Guatemala.”
During his stay in Utah, Castillo will visit with Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. and members of the legislature in Salt Lake City, and visit the 2002 Winter Olympic sites in Park City, Utah.
