September 11 Commemoration to be Held at UVSC Fire Science Building
Five years ago, hundreds of police, fire and medical personnel were killed in rescue efforts after the terrorist attack on America September 11. Reaching out to emergency responders and their supporters across Utah, new Public Safety Commissioner Scott Duncan, has invited the public to join with police, fire, emergency medical and other first responders on the morning of September 11 at 10 a.m. to honor the fallen and to commemorate the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The commemoration will take place at the Utah Fire & Rescue Academy (3131 Mike Jense Parkway, Provo) adjacent to the Provo Airport.
“A lot of people don’t even know that Utahns were involved in rescue efforts,” said Steve Lutz, assistant director of the Fire Academy. “Even UVSC’s John Shields, joined with the Salt Lake Urban Search and Rescue Team and made the four day trek by plane, truck and bus to New York City in order to help out.”
The commemoration will include a flag ceremony, poetry reading and bagpipe performance by Steve Olson, from the Murray Fire Department. Scott Duncan will speak as well as Ron Morris, state fire Marshall and Gary Wallin, from the Army National Guard.
“Local first responders are always risking their lives for us and I sometimes think we don’t pay enough attention to their hard work,” Lutz said. “This is a good way to show our respect and appreciation for them.”
All UVSC faculty, staff and students are invited to attend, as well as members of the community.
